RIP Story : June 3rd, 2024
Adrian was exhausted from the most epic match he had ever cast. The finals pit two teams of ten against each other. As with the combat that took place in the Roman Empire, this digital battle was about styles, counter-moves, and adjusting tactics. One team was the juggernaut from the regular season. Two of the players who’d grown up with the team, cris-crossing the globe looking for worthy opponents, were rumored to be leaving the esports life behind. An up-and-coming team had arrived a year earlier than expected. Included on the team was the first foreign-born player to year player of the year during the regular season. Even the stands had their own shift in supporters. The stalwarts had their relatively aged fanbase and the young guys had mostly younger faces, including a few foreign fans with their signs. The foreign fans knew the chants, and they knew all the players. They were accepted into the fold like anyone else.
The best of 13 match kicked off with the stalwarts asserting their dominance, clinching the first three games. However, the new guys, refusing to go away, retaliated with a four-game winning streak of their own, taking all the momentum. The Fans started their own chant battle. Each player had a chant that went with their signature move. As soon as the fans saw it, they went max volume into their practiced songs. After the game to make it a 3-3 tie, everyone, the players and fans looked like they needed a break, but the end was nowhere in sign for anyone.
The teams battled fiercely on the digital field, each win in the game score a hard-fought victory. The match was deadlocked at 6-6, and the winner of the next game would be the team to usher their sport into the next era. The question hung in the air, would the old guard continue their reign or would new faces take the sport to uncharted territories?
Adrian, on the train ride back to his hotel, was filled with a profound sense of honor. He reflected on the monumental event he had just witnessed, a day filled with so much action and emotion that it would take him a week to fully process. He was grateful for the seat he had, a front-row view to history in the making. The future of the sport was uncertain, but he couldn't imagine a more fitting way to bid farewell to the last era.
Thanks for reading, see you tomorrow.
EPILOGUE: Meh, fun idea, but I wanted to include more game details here; I just ran out of time. I also didn’t want to make specific references to current esports events. It’s fine.
