Game 19 - Yankees @ Blue Jays April 17th Game Recap

That Was Fun Until It Wasn’t

I was having a good time thinking of titles for sweeping the series against the Yankees. Then, for some inexplicable reason, John Schneider put in fresh off the IL Swanson to face the heart of the Yankee lineup and then replaced him with the worst-performing reliever in the pen, Mayza. I don’t think either pitcher performed to their standard, and they will get better as the season progresses, but what was the manager thinking?

The first rule of a series is to win it. The Blue Jays accomplished that. They are playing better-looking baseball. There are problems visible, but the players are starting to show signs of performing at levels we can expect as fans.

Now that the Blue Jays have had a get-right homestand, they get a day off and travel to San Diego. Does this team carry the good vibes on the road? Can we survive west-coast start times for two days? I say that as a California resident! Right now, I feel like the team has shown they can play the game at a level equal to the Orioles and the Yankees. The question at this point is, can they sustain that level, and can they control the flow of the game? I think they showed the pitching staff is good enough to hold off good lineups but the offense didn’t show the pull away that makes for easier wins.

Their series record in the young season is 3-2-1. Although they have not been playing great baseball, they are doing what a team needs to do to stay in the playoff conversation.
