Game Day - April 2nd - The Birds and the Sea’s
Yesterday got away from me with life. Had a great time but didn’t have a lot of writing time. So here we are with some quick hit reviews.
Toronto Blue Jays @ St. Louis Cardinals
Can the Jays bounce back?
No, is the simple answer to this. Sometimes the other team is just better. The follow is what I wrote during the game, before the rest of my day got away from me.
Bassitt is one of the stories. Not a very good debut but one start is one start. He was up in the zone and the Card punished him.
Jays Offense: Even if they only get one win, they had good ABs this series. Lots of deep counts and manufactured runs. Will be happy to see some power soon, but the fingerprint is there, sometimes the other team is just better.
Cardinals and timely batting. Jumped out and followed up when the Jays hit back. Honestly, felt like the wind was taking out of the Jays’ sails when the third HR was hit. Bassitt just looks hittable today and the Cards aren’t missing many when they get their chance. From the Cards’ perspective, this is great, they are taking advantage. For the Jays’ let’s hope this is a bad start and leave it at that.
The game is a write-off in the fourth. Baby Blue 1-0 Road Blue 0-1 White 0-1 Tomorrow is the Black Jays Jersey.
Bonus Review: Dbacks @ Dodgers
Ok, here is my time confession. My wife and I went to one of those paint-and-sip events. First time I’ve been and it was a ton of fun. What I hadn’t planned for was dinner after and hitting wall when we got back home. However, the Dodger game was on at the brewery were we painted. I also need to update the Muncy & Martinez tracker. Sounds like an early aughts CW crime show. “Muncy & Martinez, on the trail of the baddies.” Anyways, here are my thoughts.
I don’t think the Dodgers are bad but I think they are off to a certified bad start. Not to put too much on the first four games of the season but the Diamondbacks have looked worse and they won two of these games. I stand here and wonder what the boys are doing here. I said this yesterday, but take Trayce Thompson out of the numbers, and the Dodgers have a lot of questions to answer about their offense. The pitching seems fine but how bad was Arizona and what does a better team do against this staff? It’s as simple as, there are more questions coming out of the series then I had going into the series and that is what makes me the most uncomfortable.
Muncy sat, but Martinez was batting fourth. Here is the update tracker:
28 AB 4 Hits 2 RBI 1 BB 14 K .142 AVG .167 OBP WPA Pos/Neg 2/5 Games
Cleveland Guardians @ Seattle Mariners
I Hope to be Impressed
I was, well, I would have been.
I wish I had seen this game. The game chart and the box score suggest this game was a lot of fun for a neutral. Just like the Orioles and Red Sox, the results of this game are not as important as Seattle putting together some hits. They scored 5 runs today and matched the Guardians in hits. There is something to build on here and it takes the offensive stink of the first three games.
Cleveland is off to a great start. They won 3 of 4 on the road, the bats the working and now they get to play the A’s. All due respect to the A’s but they are the A’s. The Guardians should come out of Oakland with another series win and a great start to their season.
