A Philosopher’s Adventure #8

Episode #8 - The Importance of Rest

The colors of the mountain still sleep as Martijn returns to the homestead. I live in Southern California, which means seasons are not really a thing. I went to university where they do have seasons, and that’s a big nope. However, there is something about seeing the seasons on the mountain and how it changes the way Martijn lives that makes the idea of seasons more interesting. I think the difference is that we are seeing a person living through and making progress while the seasons change. We see the reward on his face as the colors shift. When I lived in the cold, I just felt cold all the time. The life I lived with the backdrop of seasons had no reward built into it. Yes, I gained an education, but tangible rewards come with a different kind of appreciation. The rewards of living with the seasons of the mountain have varying and plentiful reward. Rewards that grow in importance as wisdom is gained.

Once Martijn gets the power back on, he starts to build a cabin within his cabin. To me, this is a statement of intent. In Martijn’s case, he is making a space where he can be warm and comfortable, which allows him to stay on the mountain full-time. What are my own statements of intent, and how do I make them stick? In this case, we are looking at a physical object. How do I build that into my life? I have my writing schedule now, but that can be subject to derailments. I’m writing this after having been sick or in recovery from that cold for five weeks. As I sit here thinking about it, maybe the schedule is my statement of intent. This is the first weekend I am back on the keyboard. I am making progress. I am moving my own journey forward and letting the fog of lost time stay on pages past while I write the content of the next chapter.

Rest and recovery is good. Nature does it, Martijn does it, and goodness, what an incredible spot to take a nap.

Thanks for reading, see you next time.
